In Their Own Story

Gus arrived in Mexico in the late 1980s during the Chilean dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. He and Max Arciniega started Los Pollos Hermanos to sell meth, but after Don Eladio Vuente had Max killed for operating without permission, Gus was forced into a partnership with the cartel. For twenty years, he remained outwardly loyal while secretly plotting revenge against Hector Salamanca, Juan Bolsa, and Eladio. He eventually hired Walter White to run his own lab. In Better Call Saul's third season (2017), flashback appearances revealed more of his past. His death occurred after he adjusted his tie moments before having half his face blown off in an explosion.

Gus operates Los Pollos Hermanos, a chain across the southwestern United States with a flagship in Albuquerque, and Lavandería Brillante, an industrial laundry facility. These serve as fronts for distributing cocaine for a Mexican cartel and later his own methamphetamine business. The company is a subsidiary of Madrigal Electromotive GmbH, a German multinational. He collaborates with executives Peter Schuler and Lydia Rodarte-Quayle. Publicly, he is a booster for Albuquerque civic causes and makes large donations to the DEA office.

The Engine of Revenge

Gus's motives are driven by revenge for Max Arciniega's death. In the Breaking Bad episode 'Hermanos', it is shown that Don Eladio had Max killed while sparing Gus due to his connection to Chile. This loss led Gus to avenge Max by gradually killing Hector Salamanca's entire family and building a new empire. He acquired a villa on the Mexico–U.S. border containing a fountain dedicated to Max.
